Bear attacks are on the rise in Japan. By Nov 7, more than 100 bear-related incidents had taken place in the country since April, with a record 13 people killed, according to the government. This is partly due to climate change, as warmer winters may cause bears to start hibernation (冬眠) later. Japan’s aging rural population has left many fields abandoned, making it easier for bears to enter. In Akita prefecture (秋田县) in northern Japan, local officials have even asked troops for help. The soldiers set up traps to capture bears.
